The Year That Was
It has been sort of a topos to evoke the specter of 1979. I’ve done it repeatedly, as have other observers.
Aside from the growing stagflation in the U.S. (I remember farming that year at the ending of an inflation-driven boom), that was the year that China invaded Vietnam. Muslims assassinated the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan. Russia later invaded Afghanistan. The world seemed to have become unhinged. And there was more still.
The shah was abandoned and soon fell, amid American proclamations of support for him on Monday, and then denunciation of his dynasty by Tuesday, and yet more leaked reports on Wednesday of reaching out to Khomeini in Paris. Soon in his death throes he would jet the globe looking for a home and a doctor, as the U.S. let the phone ring when he called.
Soon Ayatollah Khomeini arrived in Teheran from Paris and proclaimed an Islamic revolution. Iranian students (Ahmadinejad probably among them) stormed our embassy and took hostages. In no time Ramsey Clark was denouncing America on Iran’s behalf, and rumors abounded of Carter’s backdoor deal-making to get them home at any cost before the 1980 election. (In 1980 a humiliating and disastrous rescue mission would see imams desecrating American dead on worldwide television. I recall an odious Ayatollah Sadegh Khalkhal, the hanging judge who sent thousands to the gallows, zipping open the body-bags to poke and probe the charred American corpses.)
The Sandinistas also took over Nicaragua. Radical Islamists torched the U.S. embassy in Pakistan. I could go on, but you get the picture. In all these cases, a baffled Mr. Carter sermonized a lot, blamed a lot — and in the end retired to the Rose Garden or fought rabbits from a canoe. He seemed petulant that he had come into the world in divine fashion to save us, and we flawed mortals were unwilling to be saved by him. The so-called “malaise speech” summed up his disappointment in the rest of us.

Veroveringsimmigratie

Naar aanleiding van een toespraak die ik gisteren hield, schrijft Bart Brinckman in De Standaard dat ik “de zaal verraste de zaal met een discours waarin [ik] de islam een ‘theologie van de immigratie’ toedichtte. De islamieten komen niet naar Europa om economische redenen, ze doen aan ‘veroveringsimmigratie’.” Het is verbazend hoe weinig mensen – zelfs journalisten – weten over de Islam. Anders zou Brinckman de woorden “verraste” en “toedichtte” niet gebruiken.
Ik dicht de Islam geen immigratietheologie toe; die theologie staat centraal in de Islam. De islamitische jaartelling begint niet, zoals men zou verwachten, met de geboorte van Mohammed in 570, noch met het ogenblik waarop de engel Gabriel hem voor de eerste keer een tekst uit de Koran openbaarde (straks, op 10 augustus 2010, exact 1.400 jaar geleden), maar op 9 september 622.
Wat is er zo speciaal aan die datum? Het is de datum waarop Mohammed en zijn volgelingen immigreren van Mekka naar de overwegend joodse oase Yathrib. Mohammed leidde in Mekka een weinig succesvolle religieuze sekte. De Mekkanen namen zijn religie niet ernstig, en nadat hij op een dag het Mekkaanse heiligdom, de Kaaba, was binnengestormd met de woorden “Ik breng u slachting”, vonden ze hem zelfs gevaarlijk. Mohammeds oom, Aboe Talib, en Mohammeds echtgenote Khadija (toen nog zijn enige vrouw) waren vooraanstaande leden van de Mekkaanse handelaarklasse. Zij zorgden ervoor dat Mohammed en zijn volgelingen bescherming genoten. Toen in 621-622 echter kort na elkaar zowel Aboe Talib als Khadija overleden, besloot Mohammed elders zijn heil te zoeken.
Hij vertrok naar Yatrib. Die immigratie of intocht in Yatrib wordt in het Arabisch al-Hijra genoemd. De dag van de Hijra, 9 september 622, is het begin van de islamitische jaartelling. In Yathrib werden Mohammed en zijn volgelingen welkom geheten. Yathrib was een tolerante, multiculturalistische samenleving, waar joodse, christelijke en heidense stammen rond de oase leefden. De profeet uit Mekka en zijn schare volgelingen werden door de Yathribers Muhajirun genoemd, het Arabische woord voor “immigranten.”
Mohammed had echter een eigen agenda. Hij wilde de macht in de oase overnemen.

De terreurlink van de Gazavloot
Het is belangrijk te begrijpen dat het incident met de Gazavloot een Turkse proefballon was, met als opzet de grenzen op te zoeken van wat Israël zal toelaten met betrekkig tot inbreuken op haar soevereiniteit.
Gedurende ruwweg de laatste zes maanden heeft de Islamitische fundamentalistische AKP partij met de arrestatie van een groot aantal van zijn hogere officieren zich stilletjes ontdaan van het traditionele leiderschap van het Turkse leger, door ze te beschuldigen van het in 2003 voorbereiden van een staatsgreep. Sinds Ataturk de seculiere staat Turkije stichtte, heeft het leger als een stabiliteitsmacht gefungeerd, en ook gefunctioneerd als een rem op gevaarlijk avonturisme door de politieke leiders van het land.
Die [enigszins] matigende invloed is inmiddels geneutraliseerd en islamitische fanatiekelingen hebben vrijwel de volledige cotrole over het Turkse buitenlands beleid. Turkije had ooit een redelijk vriendschappelijke en praktische relatie met Israël — met inbegrip van militaire samenwerking — maar dat is aan het veranderen.

Los Angeles. Hysterisch "Allahu Ahkbar"-krijsende supporters van de zogenaamde hulpvloot naar Gaza en daartussen één dappere joodse middelbare scholier die het opneemt voor zijn land. Hoe symbolisch voor de hele situatie: de hele Ummah, de wereldwijde (linkse) pers, islamofiele EU-politici, iedereen valt voor de zoveelste keer over die piepkleine joodse staat heen (opp. ongeveer de helft van Nederland!) omdat die !*&#! joden het weer eens gewaagd hebben zich te verdedigen.
En luister eens naar de vrouw aan het eind van de video, als de verslaggever haar vraagt of ze ermee tevreden zou zijn wanneer er een Palestijnse staat komt naast Israël. Haar antwoord: "O, nee, nee, nee, de joden kunnen samen [met de moslims] leven in een Palestijnse staat. De staat Israël zou niet moeten bestaan." Het zoveelste bewijs dat het de "Palestijnen" te doen is om het ausradieren van de staat Israël. Precies zoals dat in de handvesten van Hamas en Fatah staat...

Many reasons, but this one goes unmentioned: Environmental chic has driven us out there. As production from the shallower Gulf of Mexico wells declines, we go deep (1,000 feet and more) and ultra deep (5,000 feet and more), in part because environmentalists have succeeded in rendering the Pacific and nearly all the Atlantic coast off-limits to oil production. (President Obama's tentative, selective opening of some Atlantic and offshore Alaska sites is now dead.) And of course, in the safest of all places, on land, weve had a 30-year ban on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

When Professor Obama Meets Dirty Reality

Just plug the damned hole! That, more or less, is the leadership and direction we are getting from our President as we grapple with the oil spill in the Gulf. What else should we expect from a socialist theoretician who has never actually accomplished anything in his life?
I guess we could expect him to take credit with his daughters if it works.
This is what happens when an academic finds himself in the position of actually having to get something done. Nothing written on a blackboard or recited from a textbook or lectured from a podium will plug the leak miles deep off of Louisiana. Nothing in Barack Obama's background full of lectures and text books makes him fit for any job where getting things done is important.
Like many activities that impact our existence, drilling for oil is damned hard and damned risky and damned expensive and involves a lot of hard physical work and technical knowhow. The same can be said of making automobiles, building houses or manufacturing the heavy equipment that makes all of these activities possible. The problem is, academics unfamiliar with such work and knowhow believe their tenured cushiness and "think how" is enough.
I guess if you can Google something, you can convince yourself you can actually do it.

Inbreng Geert Wilders verantwoordingsdebat
Voorzitter, 2009 was een rampjaar: een instortende economie, werkloosheid, massa-immigratie, islamisering, onveiligheid, overlast, slechte zorg, lange files, hoge belastingen. In Nederland werd een volksvertegenwoordiger vervolgd om zijn politieke overtuiging. En tot overmaat van ramp blijkt uit het rapport van de Algemene Rekenkamer dat het kabinet over vele tientallen uitgegeven miljarden in haar jaarverslagen nauwelijks aangeeft of zij heeft bereikt wat ze ermee wilde bereiken of er mee heeft gedaan wat zij ermee wilde doen.
Voorzitter, de economie was vorig jaar dus een ramp. De grootste krimp sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het tekort en de staatsschuld explodeerden. En ook nu gaat het niet goed: eerst draaide de Nederlandse belastingbetaler op voor de zakkenvullende bankiers, nu draait de Nederlandse belastingbetaler op voor het bedrog, de corruptie en de fraude van Griekenland. Een land waar ambtenaren een dertiende én veertiende maand krijgen en waar mensen bijna direct na hun eindexamenfeest met pensioen gaan. Aan dat land geeft Nederland 5 miljard euro. Wij werken, zij de souvlaki. Wij ploeteren, zij aan de ouzo. Dadelijk kloppen misschien ook Spanje en Portugal op onze deur. Toch staan bijna alle partijen, van GroenLinks tot en met de VVD, te juichen. Maar de PVV zegt: geen eurocent naar Griekenland. En ook niet naar de Portugezen en Spanjaarden.
De keuze is: zij of wij.

As predicted was inevitable, today the Spanish newspaper La Gaceta runs with a full-page article fessing up to the truth about Spain’s “green jobs” boondoggle, which happens to be the one naively cited by President Obama no less than eight times as his model for the United States. It is now out there as a bust, a costly disaster that has come undone in Spain to the point that even the Socialists admit it, with the media now in full pursuit.
Breaking the Spanish government’s admission here at Pajamas Media probably didn’t hurt their interest in finally reporting on the leaked admission. Obama’s obvious hope of rushing into place his “fundamental transformation” of America into something more like Europe’s social democracies — where even the most basic freedoms have been moved from individuals and families to the state — before the house of cards collapsed has suffered what we can only hope proves to be its fatal blow. At least on this front.
La Gaceta boldly exposes the failure of the Spanish renewable policy and how Obama has been following it. The headline screams: “Spain admits that the green economy as sold to Obama is a disaster.”

And it continues enriching at an accelerated pace and to a greater purity (20 percent). Which is why the French foreign ministry immediately declared that the trumpeted temporary shipping of some Iranian uranium to Turkey will do nothing to halt Iran's nuclear program.
It will, however, make meaningful sanctions more difficult. America's proposed Security Council resolution is already laughably weak -- no blacklisting of Iran's central bank, no sanctions against Iran's oil and gas industry, no nonconsensual inspections on the high seas. Yet Turkey and Brazil -- both current members of the Security Council -- are so opposed to sanctions that they will not even discuss the resolution. And China will now have a new excuse to weaken it further.

Na protesten van woedende moslims laat een Indonesische stad een standbeeld van drie vrouwen slopen. Een strenge interpretatie van de islam verbiedt het afbeelden van mensen. Het Indonesische dagblad Jakarta Globe meldde woensdag dat het gemeentebestuur van Bekasi toegeeft aan de eisen van radicale islamitische organisaties. Het zeventien meter hoge beeld toont drie vrouwen in Javaanse kleding. Het beeld is gemaakt van staal en werd door de prominente Indonesische beeldhouwer Nyoman Nuarta voor een particulier vervaardigd.

Een paar dagen eerder was er al een aanslag gepleegd op een katholieke school in Bekasi, en in april hadden fanatieke moslims in de stad de sluiting van een christelijke kerk doorgezet. Zoals gewoonlijk schuwen deze stoottroepen van de "religie van de vrede" het geweld niet om de regels van hun ideologie aan iedereen op te leggen en schittert de "vreedzame meerderheid" door afwezigheid.Blijf vooral moslims importeren in Nederland. They don’t yet understand that we in the West have spent the last 600 years not merely earning the right to be blasphemous, but more importantly creating a society and a worldview in which there is no such thing as blasphemy, because all forms of speech are permitted and religious bullies no longer get to determine what is forbidden.

Climategate 2010: The Inconvenient Facts About Global Warming

In the wake of the Climategate scandal, panelists and audience members at the Fourth International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC4) indicated growing confidence that the tide is turning in favor of those who believe that manmade global warming is not a crisis.
More than 700 people — including a good many scientists, along with economists, policy analysts, and legislators — have gathered together since Sunday night, discussing the once-settled but increasingly controversial proposition of an anthroprogenic global warming (AGW) crisis. Any triumphalism was averted by a general agreement to explore real-world facts and test the assertions of alarmists. The presenters and audience members continually asked whether the data says what the modelers say it does.
The conference opened with a Sunday evening dinner at which Canadian statistical analyst Stephen McIntyre presented a meticulous history of the hugely influential “hockey stick” graph — which found an alarming rise of global temperatures since 1979 and led to the IPPC conclusion that AGW is causing a global crisis that requires drastic measures. McIntyre had begun publicly questioning the data several years ago, setting off an effort which ultimately led to the recent Climategate scandal, in which it was shown that the people behind the hockey stick graph knowingly altered the temperature record in a way that expanded a relatively common global temperature change into a shocking heat spike.

1. The First Warnings From Assyria
An Assyrian clay tablet dating to around 2800 B.C. bears the inscription: “Our Earth is degenerate in these later days; there are signs that the world is speedily coming to an end; bribery and corruption are common; children no longer obey their parents; every man wants to write a book and the end of the world is evidently approaching.”
The world didn’t end (just look around), and despite the plague of corruption and petulant teenagers, four centuries later the Assyrians would establish an empire that eventually encompassed most of the Near East. The Assyrian Empire came to an abrupt end in 612 B.C., when its capital was attacked by the Babylonian army. Still, by the standards of ancient empires, 18 centuries wasn’t such a bad run.
