Everything you need to know to understand the European Union can be discovered by simply glancing at the location of its headquarters. Brussels is in Belgium, which is not a real country, does not have a government, and does not have any money.
Belgium has not had a government for a year and half, yet the capital city (to the degree that a country without a government can have a capital) is host to one of the largest government organizations in the world. The ironies and paradoxes of the EU are clearly seen in the microcosm of Belgium.
Belgium was invented in 1839, when the powers of Europe decided to carve out sections of the Netherlands and Luxembourg and assigned what resulted the name "Belgium." This despite the fact that the bit of land was inhabited by Flemish, Walloons, Dutch, French, various Germans, and several other minority groups that had been hostile to each other for centuries. A group of unelected European leaders stepped in and said, "Let there be Belgium," and suddenly, there was Belgium -- but it was not a nation. Decrees do not make nations. Belgium is a haphazard collection of once-independent states with no interest in joining together and substantial reasons not to.

Euro crisis widens gap between EU institutions and member states
The crisis of the euro, the common currency of 17 European Union members, continues unabated. Because of massive, sustained budget deficits by several eurozone countries, some could default on their sovereign debt obligations, or the euro itself might disintegrate, profoundly affecting the EU’s political and economic future.
Very little media attention, however, is focused on a very different, but even more important, EU problem, namely its “democratic deficit.” This large, growing gap between remote EU institutions in Brussels and citizens of its member states dramatically highlights the rising frustration and impotence felt by individual voters. To combat the euro crisis, EU elites are ignoring or overriding popular opposition to harsh austerity measures and imposing on fellow democracies the policies demanded by leaders of other, more powerful EU countries.
Even if the EU-wide remedies and the requirements imposed on countries such as Greece and Italy ultimately prove to be correct financially, they come with an enormous, corrosive cost to basic concepts of representative government throughout the EU. Whether this widening of the democratic deficit ultimately will weaken the EU itself remains uncertain, but there is no doubt populist resentment is smoldering in many EU countries.

Eurosceptic? EU must be joking

WHY do these swivel-eyed, mouth-foaming, ear-steaming Eurosceptics keep banging on and on and on about a referendum?
We had one as recently as 1975!
A mere 36 years later, and these drooling Little Englanders keep demanding that the British people should have more of a say in the running of Britain. Nutty or what?
Look, the bigoted xenophobes need to understand that our politicians are united on this subject – Tories, Lib Dems and Labour have all broken manifesto promises to hold a referendum on Europe. It’s called democracy.
Can’t the goose-stepping Eurosceptics see that we owe our national prosperity to the European Union? Anyone would think that the lambada-dancing, tax-dodging, moussaka-munching nations of the EU have dragged it to the very edge of bankruptcy. Racist rubbish!

'Waarom zo bang voor het einde van de euro?'

We moeten de levensduur van de euro niet zo lang mogelijk rekken, maar er met zo min mogelijk schade van af zien te komen, betoogt hoogleraar Hein Klemann.
Zoals veel Amerikaanse economen ons op voorhand voorspelden, blijkt de euro een mislukking. De economische en politieke tegenstellingen binnen het eurogebied zijn te groot om door één monetair systeem te worden overbrugd. Al in 1992 was dat gebleken bij de crisis van het ERM (European Exchange Rate Mechanism). De mislukking om de koers van de Europese munten binnen een bandbreedte van 2,25 procent te houden wees er toen op dat de verschillen in economische ontwikkeling binnen Europa nog groot waren. Alleen door het aanpassen van de monetaire verhoudingen konden de verschuivingen tussen de economieën worden gecorrigeerd.
Het was dan ook onverstandig om in datzelfde jaar in het Verdrag van Maastricht te besluiten tot de invoering van de euro en daar nog geen tien jaar later toe over te gaan. Met de euro werd immers de mogelijkheid afgesneden om de spanningen tussen de economieën binnen Europa op te lossen door monetaire aanpassing. Voortaan moesten de aanpassingen plaatsvinden in de reële sfeer: de loonontwikkeling, begrotingen en belastingheffing moesten binnen de eurozone op elkaar worden afgestemd. Een mechanisme om dat te doen of een instantie om in de gaten te houden werd evenwel niet ingesteld. Het project was dan ook een politiek project met als doel het Europese integratieproces naar een hoger politiek niveau te hijsen.

Eens een heel ander geluid dan het het gebruikelijke gejammer over aanstaande rampen die ons zullen overkomen als de euro ten onder gaat, zoals bijvoorbeeld in dit artikel in De Telegraaf. Veel burgers in landen in Europa vinden het hoog tijd dat die Europese integratie eens decennia wordt teruggeworpen. Decennia geleden waren we namelijk baas in eigen beurs en baas in eigen land, hoefden we de arme landen van Europa niet te subsidiëren zodat ze onze producten konden kopen en hadden we niet te maken met een verstikkende deken van oekazes vanuit Brussel die de slagkracht van ons bedrijfsleven al jaren belemmert met een web van voorschriften. Weg met de euro, weg met de EUSSR, en terug naar een sterke munt en een economische unie waarin elk land zijn eigen koers kan varen. En voor we failliet zijn graag!

The Only Good Reason for the European Union

A public fight is breaking out in Europe, where the welfare model is breaking down along the southern rim -- Greece, Italy, Spain, maybe France -- as well as in the former Celtic Tiger of Ireland. Those countries are the equivalent of welfare frauds, with centuries of experience in beating taxes, laws, and regulations. The Italians figured out how to beat imperial decrees back in Roman times, and they never stopped honing their skills. Cheating on taxes is a high art form in Italy.
The harder-working Northern European countries, like Germany and Britain, are furious at the welfare cheats, as if they haven't always subsidized their own cheating classes to keep their socialist parties in power. With Arab countries from Egypt to Tunisia close to keeling over and running out of money for food imports, the whole Mediterranean basin is in crisis with the sole exception of Israel, which is becoming a new Silicon Valley.
Considering how Europe enjoyed its orchestrated rage, scandal-mongering, and catcalling at the Bush administration only a few years ago, I'd say it couldn't happen to a nicer subcontinent.

With the financial news focused on the unraveling of Europe’s state finances, the mounting economic catastrophe in the Muslim world has barely merited a mention. Egypt and Syria are about to go over a cliff, while Turkey, supposedly the poster boy for Islamic success, faces a nasty economic reversal — not a catastrophe of Egyptian proportions, but sufficient to destroy Tayyip Erdogan’s reputation as an economic wizard and make his fractious country hard to govern. The so-called Arab Spring will end with no winners, only losers.

Egypt’s foreign exchange reserves stood at $36 billion before the February uprising. The central bank claims that it still has $22 billion on hand, but an analysis by the Royal Bank of Scotland reported by the Financial Times puts the true number at just $13 billion, or two months’ import coverage for a country that imports half its caloric consumption. The central bank has lost $23 billion of the $36 billion in the past ten months, the RBS analysis concludes. Adds the FT:

So hard currency is going into capital flight and into the proverbial mattress. Egyptians are even hoarding Egyptian currency, with the level of currency in circulation growing dramatically this year at an annual rate of 25 per cent, compared with 13 per cent previously.

When President-elect Obama came to Washington in late 2008, he was outspoken about the need for an economic stimulus to revive a struggling economy. He wanted billions of dollars spent on “shovel-ready projects” to build roads; billions more for developing alternative-energy projects; and additional billions for expanding broadband Internet access and creating a “smart grid” for energy consumption. After he was sworn in as president, he proclaimed that taxpayer money would assuredly not be doled out to political friends. “Decisions about how Recovery Act dollars are spent will be based on the merits,” he said, referring to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. “Let me repeat that: decisions about how recovery money will be spent will be based on the merits. They will not be made as a way of doing favors for lobbyists.”

Bang voor de échte cijfers, Jan Kees?
Minister Jan Kees de Jager van Financiën ziet het plan van de PVV om te onderzoeken wat de kosten zijn om de gulden weer in te voeren niet zitten. Hij zei tegen de NOS dat die kosten enorm zijn. Aldus De Telegraaf.Hoe weet hij dat? Heeft hij soms een kristallen bol? Kijkt hij koffiedik? Voelt hij dat aan zijn water? Of wil hij het gewoon niet weten omdat hij bang is dat, als blijkt dat we beter af zijn met de gulden, we tegelijk met de euro ook de EUSSR afschaffen? Je zou het zo maar gaan denken.
Dat de PVV hier onderzoek naar laat doen is alleen maar prima. We weten nog heel goed dat er van de overheid uit absoluut geen belangstelling was om onderzoek te doen/cijfers vrij te geven over de vermeende baten van de massa-immigratie. We weten ook nog heel goed dat uiteindelijk bleek dat die immigratie ons behalve een hoop ellende en criminaliteit alleen tientallen miljarden per jaar kost en in de afgelopen decennia zo ongeveer de hele winst uit de gasbel heeft opgesoupeerd. Een hoge prijs voor wat diversiteit in eettentjes en huidskleur...
Meten is weten. Blijkbaar is de PVV de enige partij die nuchter genoeg is om de cijfers te gaan verzamelen. De rest van het politieke spectrum vertrouwt liever op zijn onderbuikgevoelens. Immers wel zo veilig als je met alle macht de Napoleons in Brussel in het zadel wilt houden.

First was in the United Kingdom. There, on October 23, Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron and his coalition government faced down a Parliamentary resolution sponsored by his own Conservative back-benchers. It would have required that the UK's membership in the European Union be put to a referendum. The Conservatives once stood for such a vote.

Voor meer criminaliteit: stem PvdA en SP
’Stoere VVD-taal lokt agressie uit’ kopt de Telegraaf. Het is blijkbaar weer eens zover. Schandalig, burgers die het wagen hun bezit te verdedigen en daarbij een crimineel beschadigen. Allemaal de schuld van de spierballentaal van 'rechts', jammert links hysterisch.
Even een paar gedachten die zomaar bij deze doorsnee burger opkomen:
In het Amsterdamse Frans Ottenstadion was de afgelopen weken al vijftien keer ingebroken, waarna medewerkers het afgelopen vrijdag welletjes vonden en de inbreker zelf wilden aanhouden.Waar was de politie eigenlijk? Zijn tegenwoordig zelfs 15 inbraken nog niet genoeg om onze dappere dienders in beweging te krijgen? Druk met flitsen misschien?
De 50-jarige dader ligt in coma in het ziekenhuis.Gut, nu kon de politie opeens wel vlot in actie komen. Tja, gewone burgers arresteren is natuurlijk een stuk minder gevaarlijk dan boeven vangen...
... het viertal dat de insluiper betrapte, naar verluidt de eigenaar van het stadion, zijn twee zoons en een bewaker, werd opgepakt en hangt celstraf boven het hoofd.
Even een paar gedachten die zomaar bij deze doorsnee burger opkomen:
- 50-jarige dader. Tenzij dit een brave huisvader is die, gedwongen door de crisis op latere leeftijd een nieuwe carrière als dief is begonnen, zou dit wel weer eens een van onze vele draaideurcriminelen kunnen zijn. In dat geval had de man natuurlijk gewoon achter de tralies horen te zitten. Nu weten we allemaal wel dat langere straffen niet helpen (// sarc off), maar in dit geval had het dan waarschijnlijk toch netto 15 inbraken gescheeld. Dat de man (evenals zijn talloze collega's) vrij rondliep kunnen we dus waarschijnlijk weer eens op het konto van ons falende rechtssysteem schrijven.
- Na 15 inbraken nog geen effectieve actie van de Hermandad. Epic fail!
- De burgers die door het falen van de overheid gedwongen zijn de zaak zelf op te knappen belanden achter de tralies. De politie wil niet zeggen wat er gebeurd is. Heeft de boef zich verzet? Was hij gewapend? Is hij gevallen en verkeerd terecht gekomen? Dat weten we allemaal niet. Het enige wat we wel weten is dat als je een crimineel pakt en hij in het ziekenhuis belandt onze "rechtsstaat" opeens feilloos blijkt te werken...

Zo word je dus behandeld als de politie je al 15 keer in de steek heeft gelaten, en je dus in feite voor de keus stelt je als een Jan-met- de-korte-naam nog een 16e keer te laten bestelen of het heft in eigen handen te nemen en de boef dan maar zelf op te pakken, met alle risico's van dien: Man verdacht van poging doodslag inbreker
Als de overheid zo bezorgd is dat het dievengilde niets overkomt tijdens de uitoefening van hun zelfgekozen 'vak', dan moeten ze de burgers maar gaan leren hoe je een geharde crimineel vakkundig inrekent. Kom op, minister Opstelten. Waar blijft onze cursus Arresteren voor Dummies?

Back in EUSSR

There are more than a few similarities between the newly forged federal Europe and the former Soviet Union.
It is quite ironic that only 22 years after the fall of the Berlin wall and the end of Soviet communism, a new tyranny has risen, predicated on the same failed centralist political tactics tried and tested in the old Soviet Union. Just ask Russia how that worked out.
And yet with the recent debt crisis spreading across Europe, the problem with centralism as a model has been illustrated yet again, since it is now apparent to all watching that a supranational central bank that sets uniform interest rates and controls the liquidity of an entire continent is unable to contain major dislocations and financial disruptions in member states. The financial contagion that resulted from European loan defaults, most notably in the case of Greece, has prompted calls for yet more centralization.
Factions inside the European Commission are discussing proposals to make defaulting states "wards" of the Commission, effectively ending national sovereignty for indebted states. Each "ward" would be assigned a budget officer who would oversee spending in the geographical area under his or her direction.

Als eerste een artikel van al een paar jaar terug, toen dit soort openbaringen over de werkelijkheid van het asielzoeken echt not done waren, van een zeer oprecht en gewaardeerd journalist (in 2007 overleden):

...Maar de werkelijkheid van de 'asielindustrie' is nog cynischer. Deze week werd dat wederom vastgesteld door het Korps Landelijke Politiediensten (KLPD). Nederland is een belangrijk doorvoerland van illegalen. Mensensmokkelaars managen de vluchtelingenstroom - ook degenen die nog naar Nederland komen. De nationale vrijhaven Schiphol fungeert als draaischijf. Tientallen netwerken zijn hier actief, waaronder Chinese, Irakese, Turkse en Somalische bendes, die reissommen tot 20 duizend euro opstrijken.
Het gaat al jaren zo. Vorige week zette de Leidse hoogleraar migratiegeschiedenis Piet Emmer in Trouw de feiten van de 'niet-westerse asielmigratie' van de afgelopen twintig jaar op een rijtje. De wonderbaarlijke saga van de Tamils bijvoorbeeld, die in de jaren tachtig opdoken in Duitsland en Nederland. Ogenschijnlijk spontaan, in werkelijkheid door toedoen van cynische Oost-Duitse politieke machinaties, West-Duitse halsstarrigheid en - ook toen al - het winstbejag van een luchtvaartmaatschappij. Aan het 'gat van Berlijn' dat zo ontstond, hebben we tot de dag van vandaag de tragische rozenverkopers in de horeca te danken.
Emmer gebruikt de Tamils als metafoor voor wat nadien op grote schaal volgde. Zij verruilden Sri Lanka niet voor Europa om het vege lijf te redden - daarvoor hadden zij net zo goed (of beter) terecht gekund in het nabije Tamil Nadu in India. Nee, de Tamils betaalden grof geld voor een verre reis om het elders beter te krijgen. Zij investeerden in een veiliger én welvarender toekomst. ...

Leve de cultuurverrijking...
Toch fijn dat de aanhangers van de religie van de vrede hun regionale geschillen op ons grondgebied komen uitvechten.
Incidenten tussen Koerden en Turken Arnhem
Immigratie is een echte verrijking voor onze cultuur volgens minister Leers (Immigratie en Asiel, CDA). Ongetwijfeld zal hij ook vandaag weer een paar honderd asielzoekers/immigranten/gezinsherenigers met open armen in ons land ontvangen om hun bijdrage aan onze cultuur te gaan leveren. Wie weet, gezien de toestand in Noord-Afrika en het streven van de EUSSR om ook met landen als Libië vrij verkeer van goederen, diensten en personen mogelijk te maken (zie MEDEA) brengen we het misschien ooit nog wel eens tot een echte stammenoorlog op vaderlandse bodem...
De massa-immigratie kost ons al iets van 13 miljard per jaar. Hoeveel zal de Nederlandse belastingbetaler weer moeten ophoesten voor te repareren schade, extra politie-inzet enz.? Kunnen we misschien de kosten daarvoor eens verrekenen met de talloze subsidies die deze groepen ontvangen voor allerlei culturele activiteiten? Lijkt me wel zo eerlijk tegenover de hardwerkende autochtoon!

Tea Party Group Harassed by GA Capitol Police While Occupy Wall Streeters Given Pass to Break Laws

There has been a lot of talk comparing and contrasting the Tea Partiers and these Occupy-Whatever people. In Georgia, though, we can see a stark difference. Tea Partiers are law-abiding citizens, while the Occupy Atlantans are law breakers. Sadly, Capitol Police in Atlanta have sided with the Occupiers and against Tea Partiers.
At the very least, the Capitol Police in Atlanta have definitely been treating these two groups unequally. These officers of the law have turned a blind eye to law breaking by the Occupy folks, allowing them to do anything they want, but did not extend that courtesy to those Tea Party groups that also protested at the Georgia Capitol House.
Notice in the video that the Tea Party group the Capitol Police were harassing was made up of both blacks and whites? And the young man in the video being forced to take down his flag was Matthew Perdie, who was known for his momentous freedom walk in 2010.
Now, as you can see, the Occupy people have been allowed to break nearly every law on the books governing protests in Atlanta. They’ve not been required to take out permits, have not been required to observe vagrancy laws, have not been forced to observe the time limits put on protests and have also not been required to follow the law on how long poles for signs and flags are supposed to be.

Good thing we live in the Netherlands, and stuff like that does not happen here! I am sure the 'Occupy-camping' Beursplein in Amsterdam stays within the law at all times, right? After all, in this country you get fined for riding around with a broken taillight on your bike, ins't it? The government could not let these Occupy-guys get away with ignoring/breaking rules, regulations and the law, could they???

What Gaddafi’s Death Teaches the Middle East…And Should Teach the West

There are three lessons for the region:
1. To get rid of a dictator, you need either Western intervention or the support of the armed forces.
Consider this simple list:
Dictators must fight or die and concessions don’t help.
The Western view is that revolutions are prevented by moderation and compromise, steps that please the masses and thus discourage them from revolting. This is so deeply ingrained that Western observers simply cannot conceive that approach as anything but a natural law. In contrast, in the Middle East, the political philosophy has been based on the idea that force and intimidation prevail.
With one notable exception, where brilliant maneuvering and concessions (albeit often illusory ones) worked — Morocco — the Middle East has shown that its approach works locally. Even in Turkey, where democratic norms are observed, once in power the Islamist regime has gained ground through toughness and not through concessions. The prisons are full of its opponents.
The event in Eastern Europe that most impressed Arab governments was the assassination in Romania of dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu and his wife, Elena. They knew that this could happen to them. When combined with the lesson from the USSR — how Mikhail Gorbachev’s engagement in reforms brought him down — these events played a central role in destroying the 1990s era of toying with possible moderation. The “old-time religion” of toughness and repression was reaffirmed.
Nowhere has this proven to be truer than in Syria. Despite Western fantasies of moderation and reform from dictator Bashar al-Assad, there has never been the slightest chance of this happening. The whole Obama foreign policy toward Syria was demonstrably foolish.
